Interactions between individuals and their natural environment have always been my main interest. How do organisms adapt to a changing environment? How do species spread and colonize new areas? How do individuals interact with conspecifics? How do individuals defend themselves against invaders (parasites) and how do these invaders overcome the defence. Combining the scientific fields of ecology, animal behaviour, parasitology, population genetics and molecular evolution, I aim to add some answers to these questions. Thereby I use aquatic animals, mainly regional freshwater fish species as model organisms.
The Limnological Institute of the University of Konstanz is the perfect environment to address these interdisciplinary scientific questions. Fieldwork can be carried out on the lake using all kinds of boats and fishing gear, experiments can be conducted in semi-natural artificial outdoor ponds or in smaller tanks within the aquarium facility of the fish ecology group. Within our molecular genetics lab, all kinds of genetic methods including e.g. microsatellite analysis, RSCA and sequencing can be done.
